This collection includes a typewritten copy of a letter written by Rachel Lockwood and sent to her uncle Dr. Edward Dingle Sr. in Sussex County, Delaware. The original letter was written on February 24, 1834 and postmarked from New Paris, Ohio. In the letter, Rachel offers news regarding her mother's purchase of property and describes pioneer life and the advantages of living in Ohio.

Biographical Note
Rachel Lockwood was born in October, 1807 in Sussex County, Delaware to William and Phebe (Dingle) Lockwood. She and her family moved to Preble County, Ohio in 1826. After her father died in 1827 and her mother in 1840, she moved to Miami County, Indiana in 1845. There she married Jonathan Pottersfield on September 13, 1850. She died on November 25, 1881.
