Simpson F. Lockridge collection

 Collection — Folder: S0846
Identifier: S0846

Scope and Contents

This collection contains Simpson F. Lockridge's handwritten journal he titled both "Northland, Land of the Sioux or Travels and Adventures in the Northwest" and "Northland or A Year in the North and West." His narrative recounts his "travels and adventures upon the prairies, in the 'Big Woods', and upon the great rivers" from July, 1868 to August, 1869. He added edits and amended entries to the bound journal including notes written on the back of Indiana Short Horn Breeders' Association circulars dated September, 1874. The journal only covers the part of his travels through Minnesota and Iowa and offers historical background of the areas he visited and his impressions of the farm land.

The collection also has several scrapbook pages with clippings of Lockridge's "special correspondence" articles that were printed in the Greencastle Banner (IN) during his travels from 1868 to 1871. Along with some stories found in the journal, the news clippings also include correspondence he sent to the newspaper from his visits to Omaha, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, the Napa Valley, Portland, Oregon, Victoria, British Columbia, and Yosemite; an article titled "Irish Patriots" (1867); and the poem "By the Fire" (undated).
