Scope and Contents

This collection contains two letters written by Ross F. Lockridge Jr. and sent to Mary E. Schell, an acquisitions librarian at the Indiana State Library, regarding a request by Schell for an autographed copy of his novel,Raintree County. The typewritten letters are dated October 8, 1947 and January 23, 1948 and include his handwritten signature. In the January 23rd letter, Lockridge mentions that he is "much harassed by sickness and family problems, along with the usual -- if not more than usual--ordeals of 'first noveling".

Biographical Note

Hoosier author Ross F. Lockridge Jr. was born April 25, 1914 in Bloomington, Indiana to Ross F. and Elsie Lockridge Sr. He attended Indiana University and graduated in 1935 with the highest academic average by any student up to that time. During his junior year he studied at the Sorbonne and received the highest honors among the foreign students. He received his masters from Indiana and accepted a scholarship to Harvard in 1940 to work on a PhD, but never completed his dissertation. He married Vernice Baker in 1937 and they had 4 children. His only novel, Raintree County, was published on January 5, 1948 and quickly became a best seller. Just a day before his novel was listed as number one on the best sellers list, Lockridge committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning on March 6, 1948.
