This collection includes a copy of a biographical outline provided by Charles R. Bick of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, of Joseph Livsey's service in the 11th Indiana Regiment, ranging from 1861 to 1863 and a copy of Livsey's birth certificate at Woolrich Arsenal, Kent, England.

Joseph Henry Livsey was born December 13, 1838 in Woolrich Arsenal, Kent, England to Staff Sergeant William Livsey (1789-1873) of the Royal Artillery and Isabella Phimeston (1811-1844). He resided in Waltham Abbey, Essex, England in the 1840s and 1850s with his family before immigrating to the United States. During the American Civil War, Livsey enlisted in Company A, 11th Indiana Regiment on August 27, 1861 as a 1st lieutenant. He mustered out on August 4, 1861 in Indianapolis Indiana before re-enlisting in the same regiment on August 31, 1861. Livsey was promoted to the rank of captain and transferred to Company H, 11th Indiana Regiment on January 1, 1862. On May 5, 1863, he was promoted to the Army Adjutant General's Corps. Livsey served throughout the war until he mustered out the final time on October 23, 1865.
