Historical Note
The collection includes five hand written letters from April 10, 1898 to July 21, 1898, from transient worker Ed Lind to Miss Julia McGrievy of Wabash, Indiana, as he settles into a new job in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ed Lind writes of his general observations as Indiana troops respond in Indianapolis to the President's call to war with Spain. On April 19, 1898, Congress adopted a Joint Resolution for war with Spain, and on April 23, President William McKinley issued a proclamation calling for 125,000 volunteers to serve in the army for two years in what became known as the Spanish-American War. The 157th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, formed around the Third Indiana National Guard, was mustered into service at Indianapolis, Indiana on May 10, 1898. At the time of of the muster, the unit consisted of fifty officers and 972 enlisted men. The regiment was commanded by Colonel George Studebaker.
