Historical Note

National Air Mail Week (NAMW) was celebrated May 15-21, 1938. The special week long event was created by Postmaster General James A. Farley for the twentieth anniversary of air mail service and to help promote the use of the service in the United States. The promotional event's slogan was, "Receive To-morrow's mail to-day!" and each city and town was challenged to come up with its own NAMW cachet that paid tribute to their community. The goal was to get every citizen to send or receive a letter by airmail during the designated week and by the end of the campaign more than 16.2 million letters had been sent by airmail.
