Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal papers of Charles E. and Nora E. Lee and includes the baptismal certificate for Charles E. Lee (June 8, 1915); Mrs. Lee's poem, "The Friends of the Old Home Town" (October 21, 1929); a Knightsville Methodist Church bulletin with handwritten notes by Nora (March 2, 1941); a card with a picture of the Indiana State Soldiers and Sailors Monument on the front and historical information about the monument on the back with handwritten notes by Nora (September 25, 1945); and other correspondence and writings of Mrs. Lee (1915-1956). The collection also includes a one page document regarding the Frank Sigafoos Award that was created to honor the former professional baseball player and longtime employee of Citizens Gas and Coke Utility (circa 1966), and a small needlepoint with the words, "I'll not forget thee."

Biographical Note

Charles E. Lee was born on September 24, 1883 in Greencastle, Indiana to Frank and Flora Lee. He married Nora Bunten on April 4, 1906. Nora was born on September 24, 1886 in New Winchester, Indiana, the daughter of William and Mary Bunten. Charles was an employee for Nance's Creamery for 30 years and both he and Nora were members of the Knightsville United Methodist Church in Clay County, Indiana. Nora taught Sunday School and gave away over 600 Bibles during her lifetime. Charles died on February 5, 1957 and Nora on May 28, 1970.
