This collection contains a two-page photostat of a handwritten narrative of Joseph Lane's life and political activities in Indiana that appeared in a magazine from 1858. The original papers are held by the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.

Biographical Note

Joseph Lane was born on December 14, 1801 in Buncombe County, North Carolina to John and Elizabeth Lane. The Lane family moved to Kentucky in 1804 and Joseph moved on to Indiana in 1816. Lane was first elected to the Indiana Legislature in 1822 and served until 1846. He distinguished himself in the American-Mexican War and was brevetted Major General. He was appointed Governor of the Oregon Territory in 1849 and then served as the Delegate of the Territory to Congress from 1851 to 1859. After Oregon became a state in 1859, he served as a U.S. Senator from 1859 to 1861. He was the Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States in 1860. He married Mary Pierce "Polly" Hart (1802-1870) on June 23, 1820 and they had 10 children. Lane died on April 19, 1881 in Roseburg, Oregon.
