Scope and Contents

This collection contains two teaching licenses, dated February 19, 1858 and July 9, 1860, that certified George A. Kitzinger as qualified to teach a common school in Dubois County, Indiana. The collection also includes a February, 1934 typed summary of Mr. Kitzinger's teaching record (1851-1864) written by his grandson, Robert E. Eckert, and based on information found in John T. Melchior's 1933 history of early pioneers in and around Jasper, Indiana.

Biographical Note

George A. Kitzinger was a born on January 8, 1821 in Germany and later moved to America. He was a school teacher and a clerk of Bainbridge Township in Dubois County, Indiana. He married Magdalen Heitz Hauser (1830-1912) on November 24, 1860 and they had two children, Joseph (1862-1901) Mary (1864-1957). He was killed by a falling tree at his home on October 8, 1864.
