Scope and Contents
This collection contains a photocopy of a handwritten poem, "Hoosier Volunteer," composed by Robert M. Kidwell and dated October 26, 1861. Kidwell was a private in Company E, 34th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and he wrote the poem shortly after enlisting and sent it to his mother as a remembrance of him.

Biographical Note
Robert Marion Kidwell was born in 1840 in Madison County, Indiana to Hezekiah and Jane Kidwell. He enlisted in Company E, 34th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry on September 21, 1861. He died of disease on May 11, 1862.
