Biographical Note
Hamet Nelson Helms was born near Geneva, New York on October 3, 1814 to Jacob and Anna (Dixon) Helms, one of eight children. The family moved to Carlisle, Indiana when he was young. After his mother died when he was 10, Helms lived with Dr. John Davis, studying medicine under him and at Lexington, Kentucky in 1837-1838. Helms became a physician and worked in Haddon, Sullivan County, Indiana, in various partnerships and also as a farmer. He retired from the medical profession in 1878.
Helms married Mary Ann Davis (1805-1851) in Sullivan County on December 1, 1839 and they had three children: Benjamin Rush (1841-1887), Margaret Davis (1842-1918), and Anna Rebecca (1846-1931). After Mary Ann died on August 26, 1851, he then married Amanda (Gray) Sallee (1816-1904) in July, 1854. They had three children: Samuel D. (1855-1901), Albert Gray (1858-), and Daniel Voorhees (1860-1947).
Dr. Hamet Helms died on September 17, 1892 and was buried in Haddon Cemetery in Carlisle, Indiana.
