Biographical Note
Hamet N. Helms was born near Geneva, New York on October 3, 1814 to Jacob and Anna (Dixon) Helms, who had eight children. The family moved to Carlisle, Indiana when he was young. After his mother died when he was ten, he lived with Dr. John Davis, studying medicine under him and at Lexington, Kentucky in 1837-1838. He was a physician in Haddon, Sullivan County, Indiana, in various partnerships and a farmer. He retired from the profession in 1878.
He married Mary A. Davis in Sullivan County on December 1, 1839. They had three children: Benjamin Rush, Margaret D., and Ann R. Mary A. died on August 26, 1851. He then married Mrs. Amanda (Gray) Sallee on July 8 (or 11), 1854, with whom he had three children: Samuel D., Albert G., and Daniel W. V.
Hamet died in 1892 and is buried in Haddon Cemetery, Carlisle, Indiana. Amanda, who died in 1904, is buried next to him.
