This collection includes photostats of autographed, signed official documents and letters from the Society of Friends in Ohio on 1820/12/06; Anne O'Neall in Crawfordsville, Indiana on February 15, 1842; and from John McCullough in Concord, Indiana ranging from 1848/03/01 to 1848/05/23 regarding marriage, friendship poetry and everyday life.

Biographical Note

Overton Johnson was born to James B. and Rhoda Oneall Johnson, who were married December 6, 1820 in Ohio, birth year unknown. His parents moved to the Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1834 and he was enrolled in the Wabash College preparatory program for 1834-1836. In 1836 they moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He attended Wabash College in 1838-1840 and re-enrolled in 1845. His family moved to Concord, Indiana where his father was postmaster. He traveled west and co-authored Route across the Rocky Mountains in 1846 with William H. Winter, a classmate. He is said to have taught school in Dayton, Indiana during 1847-1848. He died February 15, 1849 in Indiana.
