Biographical Note

Gabriel Johnson was born in Grant County, Indiana on January 17, 1837 to Gabrield [Gabiel] and Nancy Johnson. He was one of at least four children. He enlisted as a private in Company A, 8th Regiment Indiana Infantry on August 18, 1861. He was transferred to Company B, 69th Regiment Indiana Infantry in February 1864 and then transferred to Company A, 8th Regiment Indiana Infantry in July 1864. He was discharged at Charlestown, Virginia on September 14, 1864. He married Ursula S. Coppock in Grant County on October 4, 1874 and they had three children. He died June 14, 1906 and is buried in Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Indiana.
