Scope and Contents

The collection contains three copies of the typed transcript of Andrew J. Johnson's diaries, ranging form 1862 to 1865, transcribed by Ralph W. and Inez Jones Johnson from Greenwood, Indiana in 1961. The transcripts include a foreword with family history, a roster of Company I, 70th Indiana Regiment, and where the regiment served.

Biographical Note

Andrew Jackson Johnson, born May 5, 1842, joined the Company I, 70th Indiana Regiment on August 7, 1862 and served until June 13, 1865. He was one of 14 children born to Charles and Eleanor Johnson of Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana. Three of his brothers served in the Union Army: William Thomas (born 1837), Samuel Herriott (born 1839 and died in the war), and Nathaniel Lafayette (born 1843). On September 14, 1876, Johnson married Nancy Elizabeth Peggs (born August 17, 1851) near Franklin, Indiana and they had 9 children, 6 of whom grew to adulthood. Johnson died April 17, 1916.
