Biographical Note
William Ezra Jenner was born in Marengo, Indiana, on July 21, 1908 to Lycargus Lenwood and Leota [Leata] Jane (MacDonald) Jenner; he was one of three children. He married Janet Cuthill (of Scotland) on June 30, 1933, and they had one child, William. He was graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1930 and from the Indiana University Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1930 and practiced in Paoli, Indiana, begining in 1932. He was a member of the Indiana State Senate from 1934 to 1942, serving as minority leader from 1937 to 1939 and majority leader and president pro temporte from 1939 to 1942. He resigned to serve in the United State Army Air Corps in 1942 and retired as a captain in 1944.
He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate on November 7, 1944 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Frederick Van Nuys, serving until January 3, 1945. He next ran for office in 1946 and was elected for several terms, from January 3, 1947 until January 3, 1957. He was the co-chairman of the Joint Committee on Printing and chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration. He was a supporter and defender of Senator Joseph McCarthy. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Indiana in 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960 and was a States Rights candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1956. He resumed the practice of law after January 1957 and died in Bedford, Indiana on March 9, 1985. He is buried in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, Bedford, Indiana.
