Scope and Contents
This collection includes letters from Seely Jayne to his wife Charlotte "Lottie" Jayne during his enlistment in the Union army ranging from 1861 to 1862. There is also a letter to his daughter, Ida M. (Jayne) Weaver to the War Department regarding her father's death during the Civil War on January 26, 1889, a tintype photograph of Seely Jayne, and two lyrics sheets with patriotic songs.

Biographical Note
Seely Jayne, born about 1836, lived near North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana. Jayne married Charlotte (Lottie) Mahan on 1858. They had one daughter, Ida (1860-1943). Jayne enlisted as a private in Company B, 6th Indiana Regiment, serving in Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi in 1861 and 1862 He was killed in action at the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro, Tennessee) on December 31, 1862. His daughter, Ida, married John L. Weaver in Jennings County, Indiana on February 4, 1880.
