Biographical Note

Tilghman Ashurst Howard was born on November 14, 1797, near Pickensville, South Carolina. His father was John Howard, who was a Revolutionary War veteran. His mother’s family name was Ashurst. She died when he was around two years old, and his half-brother, John McElroy, raised him in North Carolina. At approximately nineteen, Howard moved to Tennessee. At twenty-one, he was licensed to practice law. He served as a Tennessee state senator in 1824.

In 1830, Howard moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where he lived and practiced law for three years before settling in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana. President Andrew Jackson then appointed him District Attorney for Indiana. Howard served in this position from 1833 to 1839, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He resigned his seat on July 1, 1840, to run for Governor of Indiana, but was defeated in that race. President John Tyler appointed him Chargé d’Affaires to the Republic of Texas on June 10, 1844. He remained in this post until his death on August 16, 1844, in Washington, Texas, then capital of the Republic of Texas.
