This collection contains photocopies of clippings of articles regarding accounts from World War II, Don Howard and his family, and Santa Clara High School (California) sports ranging from 1944 to 1953. The articles were clipped from the Evansville Press (Indiana) and the Oxnard Press-Courier (California) newspapers. Included in the collection are six articles written by Ernie Pyle from Okinawa, Japan in April, 1945; a copy of the October 15, 1945 edition of The Evening Times newpaper from Manila, Philippines; and a photograph of three Japanese men, circa 1940s.

Biographical Note

Donald D. Howard was born on August 6, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to George and Louise Howard. He grew up in Evansville, Indiana and after graduating from Reitz High School in 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy. Howard was reassigned to the First Marine Division as a radio operator and he fought in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he returned home and attended Evansville College. Howard married Georgia Bray (1927-2007) on August 23, 1947 and they had seven children. He graduated from college in 1949 and then moved with his young family to California. He attended University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) graduate school and had a long career as a teacher, coach, and principal. Howard died on August 27, 2015.
