Scope and Contents
This collection includes a postcard and a letter sent to Nancy Hovarter in Angola, Indiana from her daughter Hattie Weirich in Toledo, Ohio on August 12, 1924, and from her granddaughter Ruth and family in Glenwood, Iowa on Augutst 24, 1931, respectively concerning travel, unemployment, farming, drought, and the swarm of grasshoppers which devastated Midwestern crops in 1931. There is also a letter to Hattie Weirich in Kendallville, Indiana from her sister Lydia in Orland, Indiana on July 15, 1894, regarding family news such as visiting and marriages. A newpaper clipping of a poem written by Alvin M. Strauss, age eleven, titled "The Shipwreck" (ca. 1906) is also found in the collection.
There are also several advertisement cards from John Mundell & Co., Philadelphia for Solar Tip Shoes (1884), O. Carver Druggist and Stationer, Angola, Indiana (undated), Woolson Spice Co. Toledo, Ohio for Lion Coffee (undated), and Malcolm Love & Co., Waterloo, New York for Waterloo Organs (ca. 1890's), as well as a "Stoddard's Tiger on our National Holidays" advertisement booklet by the Stoddard Mfg Co., Dayton, Ohio (undated).

Biographical Note
Nancy Bixler Hovarter was born on July 5, 1843 in Kendallville, Indiana to Andrew and Elizabeth Bixler. She married William Hovarter (1842-1899) on August 6, 1869 and they had three children: Lydia (1871-1895), Charles (1873-1949), Hattie (1875-1960). Nancy died at the age of 91 on October 9, 1934.
