This collection includes family letters from Ireland (1825-1840); letters of introduction for Horan written by Irish businessmen to acquaintances in the the United States (1836); tax receipts, merchant licenses, a will, naturalization papers, and other papers of Michael and Mary Horan from Kosciusko County, Indiana (1837-1858); Civil War veterans' papers and pension papers of Hiram F. Berst (1863-1888); Berst's certificates from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Patriarchal Circle and the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), Post No. 114 (1882-1886); and a handwritten Potawatomi Indian vocabulary list (ca. 1840).
There are also oversize certificates and an indenture ranging from 1826 to 1886 (OBE003).

Biographical Note
Michael E. Horan was born in Leinster Province, Ireland on September 29, 1805. He married his wife, Mary, on March 24, 1826 and they had nine children. He and his family immigrated to United States in 1836, settling first in Goshen, Indiana and then moving to Leesburg, Kosciusko County, Indiana. He died on January 31, 1844.
Hiram Berst was born on January 21, 1831 in Pennsylvania. He married Mariah T. Horan (1836-1914), Michael E. Horan's daughter, on March 9, 1857 and they had two children. Hiram was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K, Sixth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. He died on May 4, 1887 in Warsaw, Indiana.
