Scope and Contents

This collection includes two pages containing the handwritten minutes of five meetings of the Mud Pike Local Missionary Society of Daviess County, Indiana, from its founding on August 16, 1889 to the group's 4th quarter meeting held on July 6, 1890. The collection also includes two pocket-size ledgers (V085) used by William and Ruth Holiman from 1901 to 1911 to record personal expenses.

Biographical Note

Willis Newton Holiman was born April 11, 1878 in Lawrence County, Indiana to David and Mary (Hobson) Holiman. He graduated from the old Central Normal College at Danville, Indiana (1902) and received both a Bachelor of Arts (1913) and his master's degree (1920) from Indiana Univeristy. For 50 years, he was an educator in the public schools and colleges of Indiana. In 1903, he married Ruth Wycoff and they had one daughter.

Ruth (Wycoff) Holiman was born September 4, 1877 at Cross Plains, Ripley County, Indiana to William and Jane (Whitton) Wycoff. She graduated from Central Normal College in 1901 and taught school in Ripley County for 10 years. The Holimans moved to Indianapolis in 1921 and were members of the University Heights Evangelical United Brethren Church. Ruth was active in the woman's missionary society of the church and for many years served as branch officer. Ruth Holiman died on February 15, 1955 while Willis Holiman died a few months later on June 30, 1955.
