Biographical Note
Cyrus Wilburn Hodgin was born to Tilnias and Rachel Hinshaw Hodgin near Farmland, Indiana on February 12, 1842. He was graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1867, received an A.M. degree from Earlham College in 1888, and was a graduate student in history and political science at the University of Chicago in 1892-93. He married Emily Caroline Chandler, a fellow Illinois State Normal University graduate, on August 22, 1867. They had one child. He was a principal of the Richmond (Indiana) High School from 1868-9, the first professor of history at Indiana State Normal School from 1872-1881, superintendent of the Rushville (Indiana) school system, and principal of the Richmond Normal School fro 1883-1887. He was elected president of the Indiana State Teachers' Association in 1886, serving through 1900. He became a professor at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana in 1887. From 1896-1898 he was a conductor of the Chautauqua College of History. He authored several books and other publications and died October 3,1908 and is buried in the Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana.
