Biographical Note

Andrew J. Hickenlooper was born August 30, 1837, in Hudson, Ohio. He worked as a civil engineer and surveyor in Cincinnati until 1861, when he joined the Union Army. Hickenlooper remained in the army until 1865, being mustered out as a brevet brigadier general. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati, serving as city civil engineer, president of the Cincinnati gas company, and lieutenant governor of Ohio. Hickenlooper married Maria Smith, with whom he had five children. He died May 12, 1904.
