This collection contains a copy of an eleven page typewritten biography of David F. Allen of Frankfort, Indiana. Ranging from 1808 to 1911, the biography includes Allen's family history, detailed information about his military service with Company C, Indiana 10th Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, his service with Company C, 150th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War, and his service with Company 1 of the 38th Regiment U.S. Volunteers during the the Philippine-American War (also referred to as the Philippine Insurrection). The biography describes some of Mr. Allen's business and political activities and also relates information about what local residents referred to as the "The Draypin Riot" that occured in Frankfort, Indiana in March 1874.

Biographical Note

David F. Allen was born in Frankfort, Indiana to John and Martha Allen on March 15, 1843. In April 1861 at the age of 18, he enlisted for a 3 month term with Company C, 10th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers. After mustering out on August 4, 1861, Allen and approximately 85 other men immediately re-enlisted for an additional 3 years service. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in October, 1862, he continued to serve with Company C, Indiana 10th Infantry Regiment until he mustered out on September 19, 1864. Allen continued his military service with Company C, 150th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War (1898) with the rank of captain and in Company 1 of the 38th Regiment U.S. Volunteers during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), attaining the rank of major. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

Mr. Allen married Clara Shipp (1844-1873) on December 12, 1865 and they had two children, Paul (1867-1891) and John (1869-1941). After Clara's death in 1873, he married Josephine Alford (1853-1896) on May 12, 1875 and they had 3 children: Richard (1876-1936), Joseph (1878-1912), and Clara (1880-1883). David Allen died on September 16, 1911.
