Scope and Contents

This collection contains military records and correspondence from Ross J. Haseltine ranging from 1863 to 1866 regarding equipment and supplies for Company C, 69th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. There are also letters to and from the Ordnance Office of the War Department, Quartermaster General's Office and the U.S. Treasury Department, regarding reports of his company's ordnance and ordnance stores, clothing, and equipage.

Biographical Note

Ross J. Haseltine was born November 9, 1833 in Preble County, Ohio to William and Martha Haseltine. He married Hannah West on January 4, 1852. Hannah died in 1860 and Haseltine married Eva A. Douglas (1847-1914) on January 1, 1869. He and Eva had two children, Frank (1871-1935) and Marie (1885-1969).

He served in the 69th Ohio Infantry, Company C during the Civil War. He was commissioned as an officer with the rank of 2nd lieutenant on January 20, 1862, was promoted to 1st lieutenant on August 9, 1862, and then was promoted to captain on March 7, 1863. He mustered out on December 18, 1863. After the war, he moved to Kokomo, Indiana and owned and operated a jewerly store until his death on December 26, 1892.

Historical Note

The 69th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was a regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized at Hamilton, Ohio and recruited soldiers from Butler, Darke, Montgomery, Preble, Harrison, and Fairfield counties from October, 1861 to April, 1862. The 69th was involved in many engagements, including the Battle of Stone River, the Tullahoma Campaign, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle of Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea. The regiment mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 17, 1865.
