Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence and materials of the Wagner and Waymire families, largely related to the U.S. Civil War, ranging from 1861 to 1928, including muster rolls of the 17th Indiana Regiment, correspondence regarding the Waymire brothers of the 124th and 135th Indiana Regiment, correspondence of Captain J.H. Wagner, a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) badge, and other Civil War-related correspondence.

Biographical Note

J.H. (John Henry) Wagner was born August 21, 1841 in Pennsylvania and his family moved to Elwood, Indiana when he was one year-old. In April of 1861, he enlisted in Company G, 41st Indiana Regiment and was discharged with the rank of captain on August 18, 1865 following the war's end. He married Laura Ross on April 28, 1881 and Laura was the daughter of Elizabeth Waymire Ross. The Wagners had a daughter, Effie, who married Frank W. Harrold in 1904.

Elizabeth Waymire Ross was the daughter of David Waymire and sister to Isaac and Elliott Waymire. Isaac Waymire served in Company F, 124th Indiana Regiment and died at Alltoona, Georgia on June 30, 1864. Elliott Waymire served in Company H, 135th Indiana Regiment and died at Stevenson, Alabama on July 31, 1864.
