Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photocopies and transcripts of letters, speeches, proclamations, and certificates as well as several originals covering the years of 1804 to 1828. The letters are those written both by and to Harrison during his time as governor of the Indiana Territory. There are also biographical materials including an autobiography written in 1839. Photocopies of several songs written about William Henry Harrison round out the collection. Also included are photographs of portraits and miscellaneous Harrison publications.

Correspondents include: Thomas Todd, Albert Gallatin, Patrick Shields, Thomas Scott, William Eustis, George Hunt, and Robert Brent.

Biographical Note

William Henry Harrison was born in Berkeley, Virginia, on February 9, 1773, and died on April 4, 1841. He married Anna Tuthill Symmes, daughter of Judge John Cleves Symmes, on November 25, 1795. Harrison served in the U.S. Army in the Northwest Territory from 1791 to 1798 and was Commandant at Fort Washington, Ohio, from 1796 to 1798. After leaving the Army, he became Secretary of the Northwest Territory (1798-1799) and was the first Northwest Territory delegate to the U.S. Congress (1799-1800). Harrison then served as Governor of the Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1813, living in Vincennes, Indiana. During this time, he also served as a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army (1812-1814) and was the commander of American troops at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and the Battle of the Thames (1813).

William Henry Harrison resided in North Bend, Ohio, from the 1810s to 1841. He served Ohio as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1816-1819), State Senator (1819-1821), and U.S. Senator (1825-1828). He then became U.S. Minister to Columbia (1829). Harrison was the Whig candidate for President in 1836 and 1840. He was elected President of the United States in 1840, but died of pneumonia after only a few months in office. Harrison is also the grandfather of the twenty-third President, Benjamin Harrison.
