Scope and Contents

This collection contains programs for two memorial services held for Harold W. Handley, fortieth governor of Indiana. On September 2, 1972, a service was held at the First-Meridian Heights United Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis and the collection includes a program for those attending the service and a typewritten, bound copy of the call to prayer, invocation, scripture readings, pastoral prayer, and meditation that were read at the service. Also included is a program from the September 29, 1972 memorial service held in the Statehouse prayer room (now the meditation room).

Biographical Note

Harold Willis Handley was born on November 27, 1909 in LaPorte, Indiana to Harold L. and Lottie Handley. A 1932 Indiana University graduate, he worked at his father's furniture store and as a sales representative for a North Carolina furniture manufacturer before entering politics. He was elected a state senator in 1940, but only served through 1941 due to his enlistment in the army during World War II. After the war, he was again elected to the state senate in 1948 and served until 1952 when he was elected lieutenant governor. In 1956, he was elected the fortieth governor of Indiana and served one term. He passed away at the age of 62 on August 30, 1972.
