Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of four letters sent by James C. Hanlin to his sister ranging from 1859 to 1863. Three of the letters were written while James was serving with Company E, Indiana 1st Calvary in Arkansas and he shared information about the weather, his health, attending services at a Catholic church, his regiment's movements, and a description of a battle he was involved in on October 25, 1863 near Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Also included is a copy of an invitation to the second annual Promenade Party of the M.C.B. Association (November 25, 1857); a copy of a news clipping reprinting a letter Hanlin sent to his friend, D.P. Davis, (circa 1863) in which he denounces Copperheads in Indiana; and a copy of a news clipping relating the Battle of Marks Mill (circa June, 1864).

Biographical Note

James C. Hanlin was born about 1836 in Indiana and was a marble cutter by trade. He mustered into the Union Army on August 20, 1861 and served in Company E, 1st Indiana Cavalry (28th Regiment) as a sergeant and was later promoted to Sergeant Major. He was killed at the Battle of Marks Mill on April 25, 1864.
