Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a typed copy of a letter which William R. Haddon wrote, on July 4, 1853, to Col. Davis. The letter is a response to some unfavorable communications he had received regarding the actions of the 2nd Indiana Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, during the Battle of Buena Vista. He discusses the reasons and orders for retreat, actions of Gen. Lane, Major Cravens, Moberly, Major Dicks, Col. Bowles, Lieut, Kunkle, Maj. Bradford, and [Leut] Robinson. He praised the courage and fighting ability of his men, and asked the favor of an answer to his letter.

Biographical Note
William R. Haddon was born July 17, 1805 in Randolph County, Virginia. He served as the Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Indiana Regiment, Indiana Volunteers during the Battle of Buena Vista Feb. 23, 1847, in the Mexican War. He was a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention from 1859-1851 and was a long time resident of Sullivan County, working as a farmer and flatboat trader. He was married with at least one child. He died January 27, 1859 and is buried in Carlisle, Indiana.
