Biographical Note

Charles Spaulding Grout was born to William Wirt (ca. 1832–1869) and Augusta Adelia (Spaulding) Grout (1836–1869) in Des Moines, Iowa on August 30, 1858. He spent his childhood in Vermont and was graduated from Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont in 1881. Grout then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana and was employed by the Atlas Engine Company until he joined the staff of the Charity Organization Society. He married Emma Doran (1865–1942) on September 21, 1892 in Marion County, Indiana, and they adopted three daughters: Jessie Ann (1891–1974), Florence Alice (1894–1973), and Flora B. (1894–1979).

Grout was the general secretary of the Charity Organization Society, organized in 1879, in Indianapolis from 1893 to 1916. He helped found Flanner House in 1898, following the donation of a small property with cottage by Frank W. Flanner for use as an African-American service center. Grout also organized the District Office Plan, Fairview Settlement, Social Service Church Union, and Vacant Lot Cultivation, as well as aiding in the development of the Summer Mission for Sick Children.

He and Emma moved to Washington, Brown County in 1916, where Grout became a farmer. The couple was living in Florida by 1940. Emma Grout died in 1942 in Columbia County, Florida. Charles Grout moved back to Indiana and died from chronic nephritis on September 11, 1944 in Indianapolis and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
