He moved to Fayette County, Indiana in 1817 and to Henry County, Indiana in 1829. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1843. Grose married Rebecca Needham (1819–1879) on December 22, 1836 in Henry County and they had 6 children.

He served as a judge for the 11th circuit court in 1860-1861. When the U.S. Civil War broke out, Grose was commissioned colonel of Company S of the 36th Indiana Regiment on August 30, 1861. He was promoted to brigadier general on July 30, 1864. On August 5, 1864, Grose was assigned to command the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division of the 4th Army. He mustered out on December 31, 1865.

President Andrew Johnson appointed Grose as a collector of internal revenue for Indiana's 5th Collection District on May 4, 1866, serving until 1884. After his wife Rebecca died in 1879, he married Martha J. Black on February 19, 1884 in Henry County.
