Biographical Note
H. Cook Griffith was born in Pennsylvania on during August 1825 to Allen and Sarah Cook Griffith. He moved to Indiana at the time of the Civil War and was a law partner of Govenor Oliver P. Morton's. He enlisted as a private in Company B, 34th Regiment Indiana Infantry, then transferred to Battery I, 2nd Illinois Artillery. Govenor Morton had him placed on duty with the Secret Service and he became a Knight of the Golden Circle, warning the governor when a raid was planned on Indianapolis, Indiana by the Circle.
He had one daughter, Sarah, with his first wife, and five children with his second wife, Hannah M. Hambleton from New York, whom he married in Pennville, Jay County, Indiana on January 17, 1858. He lived in Nebraska in the 1880s, where he worked as a farmer, then moved to California. He died June 28, 1899 and is buried in the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, Santa Rosa, California.
