Biographical Note

George W. Gorman was born in New Haven, Connecticut on July 26, 1825. He and his parents (one source says he was sent there as an orphan) moved to Terre Haute, Indiana when he was six, and he worked for the Wabash Courier until 1842. He enlisted in the Army in 1846, during the Mexican War, starting as a private and being mustered out in 1848 as a sergeant. He settled in Owensville, Gibson County in 1850. He served in the Civil War, enlisting on June 4, 1861 and was commissioned as Major in Company S, Indiana 17th Infantry Regiment, which he organized. On March 21, 1862, he was promoted to full Lieutenant Colonel and was mustered out on November 22, 1862, after which he was commissioned by Governor Morton to organize the 120th Mounted Infantry at Vincennes, Indiana and also organized the 10th Indiana Calvary.

He married Mary A. McQuaide [McQuaid] [McQuade](who came to Gibson County in 1848) on August 4, 1849 in Gibson County, Indiana, with whom he had six children. He served as a trustee of Montgomery Township from 1872-1876. He was appointed postmaster June 4, 1867, perhaps only serving until June 26, 1867. He was licensed to practice law in 1874 and became a notary public. He was instrumental in getting a railroad to Owensville, Indiana. He died in August, 1887 and is buried in the Owensville Cemetery, Owensville, Indiana.
