Scope and Contents

This collection includes an autographed, signed letter from Wm. M. Cleary in Connersville, IN on 1848/05/01 regarding his son John; a typeset funeral notice of Samuel Parker Tappan of Brookville, IN on 1864/08/11; and a map of the Tygart's River area of West Virginia, a site of several Civil War battles, with locations occupied by General Morris.

Biographical Note

John Pemberton Goodwin was born February 26, 1880 to Charles Francis and Martha Shirk Goodwin in Brookville, Indiana, one of two children. He was graduated from DePauw University in 1901, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He attended Columbia University for a year, then worked for the Outing Publishing Company in New York City, New York for a year, afterwards spending two years in Arizona. He was made president of the National Brookville Bank in 1905.

He married Margaret Rockwood on February 26, 1913 in Marion County, Indiana, and they had two children. He was also a director of the Dean Orchard Company in Clark County, Indiana, of the Brookville Telephone Company and of the Franklin Furniture Company. He was a member of the Murat Temple of the Mystic Shrine and the University Club. He died August 4, 1972 and is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville, Indiana.
