The collection consists of a message sent to the Educational Conference at Indiana University by the Governor of Indiana, Ralph Gates. In the message, Governor Gates addresses the end of World War II and the implementation of the Educational Conference being held to study and discuss the world in the aftermath of the war.

Biographical Note
Ralph Gates was born on February 24, 1893 in Columbia City, Indiana to Benton and Alice (Fesler) Gates. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan. After graduation, he returned to Columbia City to join his father’s law practice. On August 8, 1917, he entered the U.S. Naval Reserve as Ensign and served during World War I. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was head of the U.S. Navy air station in LeCroisic, France. Following the war, he married Helene Edwards, with whom he had two children, Robert and Patricia. Gates served as Governor of Indiana from 1945 to 1949. He became the first Republican Governor of Indiana since 1928. In 1961, he left politics behind to focus on his law career. Gates died July 28, 1978.
