Scope and Contents

This collection contains the papers of the Gaskin family of Ellettsville, Monroe County, Indiana. Included are letters from Anna Sage of Gosport, Indiana to her fiance and future husband, Tobe A. Gaskins, while he lived in Weldon, Illinois, Indianapolis and Ellettsville (1909-1910); family letters and postcards, a baby announcement, and letters from soldiers serving during World War I (1911-1926); documents about family land holdings in Monroe County (1879-1892); a pocket diary (1908-1932); and a ledger book (1918-1924) containing the constitution, minutes, and accounts of the Valley Exchange Telephone Company that was organized by the farmers of Washington, Bloomington, and Bean Blossom Townships in Monroe County.

Biographical Note

The Gaskins were a pioneering Indiana farm family. Charles Wesley Gaskins (1855-1942) was born in Monroe County, Indiana to Allen and Elizabeth (Denny) Gaskins. He married Mary Fulford (1861-1944) in 1877. Their son, Tobe (1889-1972), married Anna Sage (1890-1972) on September 11, 1910 and they had 3 children: Allen S. (1912-1961), Bernice (1916-1997), and Charles (1921-1945).
