Scope and Contents
This collection contains typewritten copies of correspondence and military papers of Bernard F. Mullen and Hugh D. Gallagher from the U.S. Civil War. Ranging from November 20, 1863 to February 1, 1865, the copies include circulars, special orders, and a partial letter sent by Col. Mullen to Gallagher; a letter from Assistant Surgeon G. A. Kunker regarding Mullen's illness; 2 letters sent by Gallagher to his brother and sister; and military orders sent to Gallagher by Lt. Col. A. G. Tassin from the regiment's headquarters at Huntsville, Alabama.

Biographical Note
Hugh D. Gallagher was born on November 14, 1839 in Manayunk, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, to Hugh and Ann Mullens Gallagher. The family moved to Napoleon, Indiana when he was a still a young boy. During the U.S. Civil War, Gallagher served in both the 13th Indiana and the 1st Irish, 35th Indiana Volunteer Regiments. He served with his uncle, Col. Bernard F. Mullens (1825-1879), and by the end of the war achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Gallagher married Mary Keen on March 5, 1868 and they had 5 children. He was a partner in the merchantile, Keen and Gallagher, in Greensburg, Indiana and served as a superintendent of the Pine Ridge Indian Agency in South Dakota during President Cleveland's first administration. Gallagher at the age of 66 on July, 25, 1906.
