Biographical / Historical
Sumner. A. Furniss was was born on January 30, 1874 in Jackson, Missouri. He worked as a clerk for Dr. E. S. Elder to pay for his three years' education at the Medical College of Indiana, graduating in 1894. He was a physician for more than fifty years in Indianapolis. He was one of the early members of the Flanner House and helped organize and was first president of the Senate Avenue Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). He held one public office as city councilman in 1920 during the Jewett administration. He died January 18, 1953.
