Biographical Note

William Freeman was born to James and Elizabeth (Gull) Freeman (natives of Lincolnshire, England) on January 6, 1841 in Medina County, Ohio. They moved to Indiana, where he read medicine under two doctors. He served in the Civil War in the 30th Indiana Regiment, Company H. He received a wound which was written up in medical journals as very unusual. He married Laura Radley in 1866, with whom he had four children. He graduated from the Indiana Medical College of Indianapolis in 1867. He was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1877 from Switzerland County. He worked as a farmer, doctor, and teacher. He served as the Commissioner for the Plainfield House of Refuge in Hendricks County from 1881-1883. He died on December 16, 1910 of yellow fever in New Orleans, Louisiana.
