Biographical / Historical

William Freeland was born in Liberty Township, Fulton County, Indiana on April 9, 1871 to Micajah Freeland and Nancy Margaret Blackburn. On October 1, 1888, he began teaching at the Hazel Brush School in Perry Township. He later taught at the Zartman School in Allen Township, then entered the Central Normal School in Danville, Indiana on June 10, 1890.

Religion was an important part of his life. He later obtained a local preacher's license and enrolled at DePauw University on September 13, 1890 from which he was graduated in 1900. He married Laura Davy, the organist at his first Methodist Episcopal church, with whom he had four children. After the death of Laura, he married Clara Mowbray on May 17, 1927. He retired in 1940 after forty-seven years of service. He died in 1958 at the age of 87 and is buried in Indianapolis.
