Biographical Note

Thomas Forsyth was born December 5, 1771 in Detroit, Michigan. He became an Indiana agent. His first partner was Mr. Richardson, he later went into partnership with his half-brother John Kinzie and son, Robert. About 1802, they set up a trading post in Chicago. He was married in 1804 and set up trading in Peoria, Illinois, also becoming a sub-agent. He was able to negotiate with the Indians for the release of prisoners taken during the massacre of Chicago. In 1812 he was taken prisoner by Illinois Rangers Captain Thomas E. Craig, who was unaware he was an Indian agent and suffered through harsh treatment, with his fellow captives. For many years he was an agent for the Sauk and Fox Indians, retiring in 1830, and he wrote about the history of Indian tribes of the North West. He retired to St. Louis, where he died on Oct. 29, 1833.
