Biographical Note
Janet Tyler Flanner was born to Francis [Frances] and Mary-Ellen Hockett Flanner on March 13, 1892, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was one of three or four children. She attended Tudor Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana and the University of Chicago. She married William Lane Rehm in Indianapolis on Apr. 25, 1918; they divorced in 1924.
She lived in France for many years, wrote many articles for the New Yorker under the name of "Genet" and was the Paris correspondent from 1925 to 1975. She wrote one novel, the "Cubical City," published in 1925. She was awarded an honorary Litt. D. degree in 1958 by Smith College. She received a National Book Award in 1966 for the first volume of "Paris Journal." She was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal after translating many French works. She died November 7, 1978 in New York City and her cremated ashes were scattered at sea.
