Biographical Note

Walter R. Fertig [Fertich] was born September 15, 1852 in Indiana to Jonah and Malinda [Melinda] Fertig. He was the older of two children. He attended Northwestern Christian University (now Butler University) in Indianapolis, Indiana from 1869-1873. He taught school in order to finance his studies and became a lawyer, first reading law in the office of Byfield and (Judge) Howe. He married Jeannie Ross on November 15, 1881 in Hamilton County, and they had two children, living in Noblesville, Indiana where he practiced law. His son, Emmet R. Fertig, was mayor of Noblesville from 1939-1944 and 1950-1952. Walter died on February 19, 1929 and is buried in the William Creek Cemetery in Marion County, Indiana.
