Biographical Note

The Reverend Ezra Ferris was born on April 26, 1783 in Stanwich, Connecticut to Isaac and Mary Sherwood Ferris. He was one of nine children. He attended Philadelphia Medical College and was a practicing doctor. He married Catherine (Caty) Thornell on December 5, 1804, with whom he had ten or twelve children. They moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1807 and served as one of the first Baptist ministers in that part of the state, pastoring a church in Lawrenceburg for more than thirty years. Catherine died November 14, 1843. He later married Amanda German Abbott on November 6, 1847 (she had four or five children from her first marriage which ended in divorce). They may have had a child together.

He represented Dearborn and Ripley Counties in the Indiana House and Senate from 1816-1822,1826-1827 and 1830-1831. His brother Abram and nephew Benjamin also served in the Indiana General Assembly. He operated an apothecary shop and furniture business, taught, was the author of a book about Miami County, Indiana, a justice of the peace and on the board of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank in Madison, Indiana. He was a Whig. He died April 18, 1857 and is buried in the Greendale Cemetery in Greendale, Indiana.
