Biographical Note

Robert Henry Fauntleroy was born in 1806 in Greenville, Virginia to Joseph and Elizabeth Fouchee Fauntleroy. In 1827 he moved to New Harmony, Indiana with his sister Emily and her husband, and first cousin, Joseph Fauntleroy. He married Jane Dale Owen, daughter of social Reformer Robert Owen, on March 23, 1835; she was a Scottish Presbyterian, he a southern Episcopalian. They had four children, and Jane wrote an unpublished account of their father's life and work for them, entitled "Records of a Beloved Life, For My Children." He was an engineer and was awarded patents for two inventions, a gun lock and a fly driver. In 1835, he joined the Topographical Bureau in Washington to begin a preliminary survey of Indiana for a system of internal improvements. He was then appointed Resident Engineer of one of these transportation projects, a line of railroad on the Jeffersonville and Crawfordsville Road; his yearly salary was $1,500. He was a partner in a mercantile business, Sampson and Fauntleroy, for three years, after which debts caused him to leave the partnership. In 1845, he surveyed a canal route from Terre Haute to Evansville. He began work for the U.S. Coast Survey in 1846, mostly along the Gulf of Mexico. He wrote a number of scientific articles, detailing various experiments he had conducted. He died of cholera on December 13, 1849 in Galveston, Texas.
