Historical Note

William G. Ewing and George W. Ewing headed a fur company based in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Peru, Indiana during from 1830-1840s. Their business and John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company were in constant competition during this time period. In July 1839, the Ewings negotiated an agreement with the American Fur Company to become stockholders. Later, George W. Ewing was elected to the Indiana Senate and tried to pass legislation to end the American Fur Company and its dominance in Indiana, which did not pass.
