Biographical Note

James Evans, Robert M. Evan's brother, was a sergeant, then perhaps a colonel in the militia. He lived in Princeton, Indiana and died sometime between December 1832 and May 1833.

Biographical Note

General Robert Morgan Evans was born on February 17, 1782, in Frederick County, Virginia, one of at least 7 children. the family moved to Kentucky, then to Tennessee in 1790, where he served as a deputy county clerk. Robert married Jane Trimble in 1803 in Kentucky, and they had at least one daughter, Julia and one son, Cornelius. They moved to Indiana Territory in 1805, settling two miles north of Princeton, Indiana. From 1809-1811, he kept a hotel in Vincennes, Indiana. In 1811, during the Indiana War, he joined General Harrison's army, participating in the Battle of Tippecanoe and was commissioned a brigader-general. He then returned to what became Gibson County, Indiana and served as county clerk, county, recorder, county surveyor and county agent. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1816. They lived in New Harmony, Indiana, where he operated a hotel.

He owned land in what is now Evansville, Indiana and replotted his and other owners' land. Evansville is named in his honor. When he moved to Evansville in 1824, some of the colonists of the Rapp-Owen community came with him. He served in the House of the Indiana General Assembly, from 1819-1820, 1823-1824, 1825-1826 as Speaker, and 1829-30. His household included two free colored persons in 1830. In 1836, he and F.E. Goodsell wagered $500.00 on the electoral vote of Indiana, and they were both indicted and fined, General Evans one cent. He was involved in organizing the first State Bank of Indiana, and one of the incorporators of the Evansville and Lafayette Railroad. He was a trustee for the Princeton Academy. He died on December 14, 1842 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana.
