Biographical Note
George Evans was born on February 25, 1802 in Newberry County, South Carolina to Benjamin (1760-1830) and Hannah (Smith) Evans (1767-1853). He attended school in Ohio. Evans married Mary Haskett (1798–1859) in Warren, Ohio, on February 6, 1822 and they had six children: Asenath, Owen, Sarah, Richard, Rebecca, and Thomas. The family moved to Henry County, Indiana around 1825. Evans was a farmer, a Quaker, and Democrat until the 1850s when he joined the new Republican Party. He represented Henry County in the Senate of the Indiana General Assembly from 1848 to 1851. Evans was a trustee for Indiana University from 1852 to 1857. He died on November 15, 1863 and was buried in Spiceland Friends Cemetery in Spiceland, Indiana.
