Biographical Note

Gustave Baumann was an American printmaker and painter, and a leader of the color woodcut revival in the United States. He was born on June 27, 1881 in Magdeburg, Germany. His family immigrated to the United States in 1891. At age 17, Baumann worked at an engraving house by day while attending the Art Institute of Chicago by night. In 1904, he returned to Germany to attend the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich where he studied wood carving and learned the techniques of wood block prints. He returned to the United States and was producing his iconic color woodcuts as early as 1908, earning a living as a graphic artist. Baumann began to print from separate color blocks in 1909 using the European style press. He made his own inks and used linen papers made in Germany. He produced artwork for advertising and commercial illustration, as well as fine art prints. Baumann spent a good deal of time in Brown County, Indiana, where he refined his printmaking technique, and was a member of the Brown County Art Colony. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1918. Baumann married Jane Devereaux Henderson on June 25, 1925 and they had a daughter, Ann, in 1927. He and his family remained in Santa Fe for more than fifty years until his death there on October 8, 1971.
